Homer is perhaps the best staging location for Bear Viewing in Alaska. Some of the highest concentrations of Brown Bear in Alaska are directly west of Homer across Cook Inlet via float plane. Bruin Bay and the McNeil River Sanctuary are a one hour flight from Homer and are among Alaska’s most popular viewing areas. An air charter to Brooks Lodge in Katmai National Park is another excellent option from Homer. The Alaska State Ferry serves Kodiak from Homer as well, where bear viewing opportunities are world renowned. Several marine charters also ply the Katmai coast and offer multi-day bear-viewing packages. There are a few lodges within the Katmai National Park that offer exclusive overnight packages. No matter what your destination, the remote, unspoiled wilderness that these massive land carnivores call home affords unparalleled wildlife viewing and astounding natural beauty. View the active volcanoes of the Alaska Range looming 10,000 feet above sea level on the flight across Cook Inlet-- including Mt. Augustine, Mt. Redoubt, and Mt. Spur. This is truly a rare, life-altering experience. Your guide will offer experienced insight into these magnificent creatures and educate you about the complexity of their eco-system. This is a full day trip that requires moderate physical abilities and a minimum age of 8 years old. We recommend you carry a daypack with sun tan lotion, camera, binoculars, light rain gear, snacks, bottled water, gloves, hat and first aid kit.
